The League proposes a reform to speed up teacher hiring

"The reinstatement of merit-based rankings in teaching competitions and the regional lists of eligible candidates, expected from 2026, operations introduced with the recent School Decree, are the first step toward a diversified teacher recruitment system. The goal: to fill as many permanent positions as possible authorized by the financial authorities, thus promoting the quality of teaching." This was stated in a statement by Mario Pittoni, head of the Lega's Education Department and former chair of the Senate Culture Committee. "In recent years," Pittoni explains, "only a portion of available teaching positions have been filled. The competitive selection mechanisms based on qualifications and exams are too slow and cumbersome. Hence the idea of investing in the rankings of those who have put in good results but have not been ranked among the winners of the competition or have acquired particular experience. Therefore, not just the traditional competition, but also attention to merit and competence, as is already the case, even if not yet in a structured form," he concludes, "in the hiring of teachers for support activities."
