Security Decree is law with 109 yes votes in the Senate

The Senate has definitively approved the new Security Decree wanted by the Government of Giorgia Meloni . The final vote in the Senate saw 109 yes votes against 69 against and one abstention.

The measure, let us remember, had already passed the Chamber last week. The opposition, however, protested in the Senate against the Security Decree. The senators of the PD, M5S and AVS, as a sign of protest, sat in front of the benches shouting " shame ", requesting the convening of the conference of group leaders.

Security Decree is law: all the measures foreseen

As we have seen, the Security Decree is law with 109 yeses but, what are the new features introduced? There are 14 new types of crime and 9 new aggravating factors . Many of the new penalties are linked to the area of dissent and social protest . For example, now environmental protests or union pickets will be subject to criminal proceedings (up to two years of imprisonment).

The decree also introduces a new crime, namely the arbitrary occupation of a property intended for someone else 's domicile , with a penalty of two to seven years in prison. Thanks to this new provision, immediate eviction actions are possible, regardless of the social situation of the occupants. One of the new rules most contested by the opposition, dubbed "anti-Ghandi", provides for the transformation of roadblocks into criminal offenses. In short , anyone who obstructs, without violence, a road or a railway , risks two to six months in prison. With the new Security Decree , a new crime has also been established, namely the revolt inside penitentiary institutions , CPR or hotspots, including passive resistance, that is when the inmates do not obey orders but do not use violence. The penalties range from one to six years, up to ten for those considered to be the instigator. Staying on the subject of prison, pregnant inmates or those with young children will be transferred to Icam (lower custody institutions for mothers), thus eliminating the judge's discretion. But it doesn't end there, in the new Security Decree any activity related to hemp inflorescences is prohibited, while the police force will have more resources, for example a special fund of up to 10 thousand euros will be introduced, in order to cover legal expenses for agents involved in legal proceedings related to the service performed. Finally, penalties for those who defraud elderly people will be increased (from two to six years of imprisonment).
