Third term, the League's amendment fails to pass the Senate

The League's amendment on the third mandate , as expected, does not pass the Senate committee: 5 votes in favor (in addition to the League, also Iv and the representative of the Autonomies) and 15 against. Abstentions were the president of the committee Alberto Balboni (FdI) and the senator of FdI Domenico Matera .
For the center-right, it is not a great show, because the vote makes clear a clash that has been going on for months on the ban on third mandates of regional presidents. The Carroccio, in an attempt to save Luca Zaia in extremis, has therefore tried the card of this amendment. Both Forza Italia and FdI had announced, with different reasons, the no. So they went to the count and here is the result.
After that it was also clear that the Northern League's move of this amendment, presented on Tuesday at the last minute, was a kind of flag placed there also to calm the waters internally. The issue does not only concern Zaia now, but also Massimiliano Fedriga in the future.
FdI had formally said it was open to political discussion, provided there was an agreement in the coalition. A bit of an impossible ask, given that Fi immediately closed off any possible discussion, speaking of a "question of principle" on a topic that was not in the center-right program.
