Tuscany, Democratic Party negotiations. A marathon meeting at the Nazareno, Giani: no step back.

July 15, 2025
Florence, July 15, 2025 – The hugs took four interminable hours of intense discussion and "plenty of water to drink" to stave off the heat. But, to paraphrase a classic Democratic Party catchphrase, this time with a happy ending: " Eugenio , stay calm, you're the candidate in Tuscany, but the official announcement will come a minute after the agreement is finalized in Campania with the Five Star Movement on Roberto Fico's name." This would be the final outcome of the conclave between Giani and Elly Schlein , supported by their loyalists Igor Taruffi, Marco Furfaro, and Emiliano Fossi. From the Nazarene, the first-term governor entered as a cardinal and left as Pope, but with reservations. Now, it's more of a stop-and-go than a forced confinement to re-establish the lineup in the eyes of potential allies in the broader camp (read: Five Star Movement): coalition, program, names. "No step back," the governor assures. It is both necessary and physiological to have to mend and defuse the chain reaction of the self-candidacy sent via certified email to the management group to "get out of the quagmire" less than three months before the regional elections in Tuscany , of the pressure from polls, endorsements from unions and administrators, of credit openings (not agreed upon but strategic) on social income, public water and end-of-life, in order to "warm the hearts" of AVS and 5 Star, the latter being arch-skeptics, on the profile of a "Leopard-esque, good for all seasons" Giani.
The Tuscan-style Nazarene pact was born from this: the reversal factor or "Gianicide" has been eliminated, to plant the flag of a Schleinian in place of a reformist who at least commands the same consensus, but no rushing forward on Giani's part will be tolerated. It was "four intense hours," sources close to the president told reporters, "an unprecedented day in Giani's long political career." Schlein, initially "rigid," was simultaneously studying the hot topics of the already tense election campaign and developing new strategies for national deployment, using the red stronghold as a "laboratory" ahead of the 2027 general election. Of course, the other mission was to secure a non-belligerence between the governor's camp and that of the regional secretariat.
And so, at the end of the day, it was a "draw and draw," despite the differing interpretations of Giani's and Schlein's supporters. Giani's pre-summit conviction that the Democratic Party could predict "the future of Tuscany's government" around his availability transformed by the evening into a responsibility to "trust the party," after having "effectively clarified to the national and regional leadership every aspect that had generated misunderstandings and given the impression of nonexistent divisions." What a shame. that the Schleinians in the regional secretariat still have some venom left in their bodies: “Elly has brought Giani back into line – they lash out –.
So the blitz that the reformists attempted in recent days has actually fizzled out." These thrusts were silenced by Secretary Fossi with a "denial" that, however, poorly conceals the nervousness of his faction.
Therefore, with the regional elections approaching—some predicting July 18th, others the 20th—it was first necessary to restore the balance of power through a scathing reprimand, even though the 60% no-confidence vote is not forthcoming. Perhaps this is also why insiders are already speculating about a late amendment to the statute regarding candidacies. As for the lists, Schlein has already called for a complete discontinuity. As for the gubernatorial candidate, there no longer seems to be any reservations. Except for the timing, "towards the end of August," warn Schlein's supporters in the shadow of the Dome.
