Tuscany first, black jersey for Trentino Alto-Adige. Here is the map of the referendum turnout

No quorum reached in the referendums on work and citizenship. Abstentionism wins . Turnout remained stuck at 30.6%. The cities in the center-north held up best: it is here that turnout exceeded the national average, hovering around 36%. Furthermore, in contrast to the past, more women than men went to the polls. This is the social cross-section of the vote for the referendums on work and citizenship, as shown by data from the Ministry of the Interior.

More voters in Florence and Bologna, strongholds of the Democratic Party and Avs

And that Youtrend, in analyzing them from a socio-cultural and political point of view, confirms also noting how the political imprinting of the call to the polls has weighed on participation. It is no coincidence that it is in the strongholds of the Pd and Avs - above all, Florence with 46.93% and Bologna with 47.67 - that there are more voters.

Citizenship, the peak of yes votes in Milan and Turin

Just as the question on citizenship reaches the peak of yes votes in the so-called ztl (limited traffic zones) of the central areas of large cities, such as Milan and Turin . While those concerning work were voted on the most in the popular areas of large cities: this is the example of the San Salvario, Aurora and Mirafiori districts of Turin .

The trend of the vote

The voting trend was still dominated by the flop on the quorum. Even if with a turnout decidedly higher than the referendums on justice called by the center-right in 2022, and voted by only 20.9% of voters. And slightly lower than the 31.19% collected by the referendum on marine drilling in 2016. An issue, some political analysts point out, that did not have such a strong political brand behind it as today. Which instead seems to have weighed heavily on citizens' decisions now.

In any case, focusing on who voted, the identikit is quite clear. And - again according to the analysis of Youtrend by Lorenzo Pregliasco - a motivated, reasoned vote emerges, closer to the progressive front (mostly an expression of the Democratic Party and the left) and with a high level of education. For example, in cities with more than 20% of graduates, the turnout rose to 36.7%. Furthermore, the most populous cities fill the ballot boxes: in municipalities with more than 100 thousand inhabitants, the average is 35.5% of those entitled to vote and this is especially true in Turin, Milan, Genoa and Rome .

Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna first, black jersey for Trentino Alto Adige

And the regions? With over 39% turnout, Tuscany is the first region for the number of citizens who went to the polls for the five referendums. In second place, with 38%, is Emilia Romagna , then Liguria and Piedmont practically tied with about 34.5%. "With an average turnout of 39.09% in the referendums, in some areas such as Sesto Fiorentino (the pride of my city of residence), Radicondoli, Pontassieve and Monterotondo Marittimo the quorum was exceeded. A strong signal, which speaks of active and aware citizenship", the satisfied comment of the president of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani on social media.

Immediately below the podium are the Marche (32.7%), followed by Umbria (31.3%) and Basilicata (31.1%). Then Lazio (31%), Lombardy (just under 31%), Abruzzo (29.8%), Valle d'Aosta and Campania (29%), Puglia (28.5%), Molise (27.8%), Friuli Venezia Giulia (27.5%), Sardinia (27%) and Veneto (26.3%).

Black jersey for Trentino Alto Adige with 22.5%, Calabria and Sicily , tied at 22/23%.

In the South, the emptiest ballot boxes: low turnout on the islands

The turnout also goes hand in hand with geography, splitting Italy in two and leaving the emptiest ballot boxes in the south. In the southern regions, turnout stood at 24% with the lowest in Sicily at 23%. Only Sardinia was slightly higher, at 27%, probably because it was driven by the administrative elections in 7 municipalities, including Nuoro . In the hometown of Sardinian governor Alessandra Todde , with 59% the quorum was exceeded. In the north, the province of Bolzano was the last to turn out, stopping at 15.9% of voters.

More women than men at the polls

The gender also changed in the vote: 31.3% of women voted and 29.1% of men. A clear gap compared to the European elections of a year ago (then in 91 provinces men had been the most numerous, as has often happened in Italian history) and interpreted by analysts as a political connotation. According to Pregliasco for example, especially among young people, women are closer to the progressive front and therefore more participatory in voting than men. Hence the difference at the ballot boxes.
