Her mission in the European Parliament has concluded after a year, and so she bids farewell to her seat in Strasbourg, heading for other shores. And it's fitting to say so, given that we're talking about Carola Rackete , the German and now former MEP for Die Linke-Left, the one who, as captain of the Sea Watch, in 2019 challenged the naval blockade of the other Captain, our Captain, then Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, in a clash that culminated in a lengthy legal battle , the now-infamous " Open Arms" trial.

"My candidacy and my mandate ," Rackete explained, " have always aimed to contribute to the renewal of the Die Linke party, a process that is proceeding successfully ." Her resignation should be interpreted as a handover within the party, aimed at a common goal. Rackete said: "As someone active in social movements, my team and I have discussed from the outset how to collectively shape the mandate, and this collective spirit is now being realized through my resignation. I thank all the voters and especially all the party members who have placed their trust in me."

Now, without her European commitment, Rackete has said she wants to dedicate herself more consistently to action against the climate crisis , an issue she had also fought for so strongly in Strasbourg in the EVI, ECON , and AGRI committees, focusing on those most affected by the consequences of climate inaction, but also on "the negative impact of EU migration policies," as The Left noted in its farewell message. The baton has now passed to Martin Günther , who, Rackete assured, " will continue the work," namely his commitment to economic and social justice, the climate crisis, and international equity. Left MEP Ilaria Salis also commented on the resignation, posting a photo with Rackete and writing: "Thank you for your commitment, inspiration, and consistency. See you in the fight!"

Poisonous words, however, came from MEP (and deputy secretary) of the League , Roberto Vannacci, who in his "thought" about Rackete on Facebook first clarified, "We won't miss you ." He then expressed the hope that " Ilaria Salis and Mimmo Lucano will also follow suit ." And he peppered it all with the usual bullying methods: first, a zoom-in of Rackete's unshaven legs. Then a collage of three photos of the woman, again with the aim of highlighting the fact that she hadn't waxed. In short: general, writer, politician... and now also a beautician.
