Luiz Davidovich wins the Twas Apex Prize in quantum science.
Luiz Davidovich, physicist quantum and professor emeritus at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, is the winner of the 2025 Twas Apex Award. With this recognition, the World Academy of Sciences for scientific progress in developing countries (Twas), based in Trieste and administered as a unit of UNESCO program, joins the celebrations of the Year International Quantum Science and Technology Award. The is awarded to Davidovich "for his contributions to the progress theoretical and innovative experiments in quantum optics and in quantum information, and for its world leadership in the field of quantum science." Davidovich, Twas explains, provided contributions significant scientific achievements in key areas of technology quantum, such as quantum computing, sensing and communication. His research has improved understanding of how quantum mechanical systems interact with their environments. "Today quantum science and technology are integrating it more and more into everyday life", he Davidovich said. "They power computers, solar panels, smartphones, medical instruments such as lasers and equipment for magnetic resonance imaging, advanced materials, GPS systems and even precision agriculture". Quantum sensors show also a great potential for environmental monitoring and of health, he added. For example, they can detect reserves underground water and oil resources and improve diagnostics medical. "Ensuring broad access to these technologies is essential to bridge the gap between the richest countries and the less developed ones," he said. Davidovich will receive the award during the 17th Conference Twas General Assembly scheduled in Rio de Janeiro from 29th September to October 2nd.
