Daan Hoole wins Lucca-Pisa time trial. Spectacular arrival in the shadow of the Tower

May 20, 2025
Pisa, 20 May 2025 – Daan Hoole won the tenth stage of the 2025 Giro d’Italia , the 28.6-kilometre Lucca-Pisa individual time trial. Isaac Del Toro keeps the pink jersey, but the Mexican from UAE Team Emirates-XRG has lost much of the advantage he had over Juan Ayuso. It was a time trial that provided many indications and that in fact shuffles the hierarchies of the general classification.
"It's incredible. I'm really excited and I want to thank a lot of people," Hoole said. "I felt good and I was aiming for this stage, but I never thought I would actually make it. The big names in the general classification got rained on and that changed the race a lot, but I still managed to beat Josh Tarling in the same conditions. I was surprised to be able to overtake him: he's one of the best time trialists in the world. I did a good second half, which allowed me to make up time on him. A victory at the Giro is something special. I'm really happy!"
The weather conditions were decisive, with rain in the final stages slowing down the men in the general classification: the winner was the Dutchman from Lidl-Trek, with a time of 32'30", followed by the favourite Joshua Tarling, the Ineos time trialist placed 7" behind. Third was the British Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step) 10" behind. The performance of Primoz Roglic was decisive, seventeenth at 1'15", but the Slovenian from Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe has recovered a lot of ground in the general classification (he is now fifth at 1'18" from the pink jersey).
The Spaniard Juan Ayuso has instead reduced the gap from Isaac Del Toro, his teammate who however remains in the pink jersey with a 25" advantage. Antonio Tiberi is still third, the Italian is 1'01" behind the Mexican. Tomorrow, May 21, the eleventh stage, the Viareggio-Castelnovo ne' Monti of 186 km: it will be a lively stage, with San Pellegrino in Alpe to be tackled halfway.
A city dressed for the holidays, Pisa welcomed the Giro with the enthusiasm of great occasions. In the square, despite the bad weather, residents and tourists gathered to watch the arrival but also the whole show that preceded the end of the stage. The great show of the army paratroopers kept everyone with their eyes to the sky during the launches in the shadow of the Tower. “A unique show that after years returns to Pisa – said the mayor Michele Conti – This stage that starts from nearby Lucca, a city with which we have a deep synergy, is certainly important from a sporting point of view, but it is also important from a tourist and economic point of view. A great day of celebration for the Pisans and for all the visitors for which the municipal administration has worked very hard”.
