Lorenzo Bonicelli , who was injured on July 23rd while dismounting from the rings during the artistic gymnastics qualifying rounds at the Universiade in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany, is returning to Italy. The Italian gymnast , transferred by air ambulance from the Essen University Hospital to Niguarda Hospital in Milan , where he will be admitted to the neurosurgery department of the ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano di Milano, remained alert throughout the flight, with his family and girlfriend at his side at all times . The complex operation was coordinated by federal doctor Andrea Ferretti, who returned to Germany just yesterday.

Professor Ferretti had returned to Germany to closely and personally oversee the delicate boarding procedures. Bonicelli's return journey began around 8:00 a.m. with the takeoff of the air ambulance from Innsbruck Airport and concluded around 3:00 p.m. with the arrival of the Italian gymnast at the neurosurgery department of Niguarda Hospital , whose medical director, Giuseppe Sechi, will now care for the Italian gymnast.
