Sergio Campana, historic president of the Italian Association of Italian Catholic University Students (AIC), has died.

Sergio Campana, 91, the longtime president of the Italian Footballers' Association, died last night. A former footballer, he led the players' union for 43 years, from 1968 to 2011. Campana passed away last night in his hometown of Bassano del Grappa, in a nursing home where he had been hospitalized for several weeks due to declining health. Campana, whose death, according to the AIC, occurred last night at 3:45 a.m. in Bassano del Grappa, was born on August 1, 1934, and played as a center forward in Serie A with Lanerossi Vicenza and Bologna. A law graduate and a member of the Bar Association since 1967, he retired from playing that same year; the following year, he founded the AIC with Gianni Rivera and Sandro Mazzola.

In 1974, the first players' strike took place, with the match starting 10 minutes after the scheduled time in defense of Scala, a player who had refused a transfer from Bologna to Avellino and was about to be 'punished' by the Irpinia club for this.
