500 free helmets will be given to Torreón motorcyclists in a municipal lottery.

500 free helmets will be given to Torreón motorcyclists in a municipal lottery.

Next Thursday, 500 free helmets will be distributed to the same number of motorcyclists through a raffle, as part of the initiatives and programs aimed at reducing accidents involving this type of vehicle.

The Director of Roads and Urban Mobility, Luis Morales Cortés, reported that this is part of the "No Helmet, No Ride" program, which has developed training programs on preventive and defensive driving for those who use this mode of transportation.

The aforementioned program began under the previous administration in 2022, and is currently approaching the milestone of 9,000 motorcyclists trained since then, with a total of 293 generations; of that number, just over 3,200 people have been trained this year alone.

Morales Cortés pointed out that the capture of motorcyclists is carried out through inspection operations by traffic agents. , so those who are found without this means of protection have their vehicle confiscated and are required to take a preventive and defensive driving course.

Once they have received the training, the vehicle is returned to them and they are required to wear a helmet, as a fundamental measure for preventing fatal accidents, since wearing this item significantly reduces the possibility of serious injury or even death.

The Director of Roads and Urban Mobility emphasized that the municipal administration is focused on developing public policies that allow for greater organization among those who use these vehicles, whose number has increased considerably.

To be approved, penalties for passengers without helmets

Once the Mobility and Road Safety Committee approved the initiative to also penalize the failure to wear a protective helmet for motorcycle passengers, it will now be submitted to the full City Council for approval.

In this regard, the Director of Roads and Urban Mobility emphasized the importance of passengers also wearing this safety equipment, stressing that it is not a revenue-raising measure but rather one for protection and accident prevention.

He stated that the penalty for motorcyclists whose companions do not wear helmets will be the same as that currently applied to those who drive these vehicles and do not wear them, that is, the equivalent of one Measurement and Update Unit (UMA).
