Coahuila experiences a drop in employment: INDEX reports a drop in the IMSS

The president of the maquiladora industry reported that 45,000 jobs were lost in the country in May alone.

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, COAH.- During the INDEX Coahuila Norte Binational Forum, held in Piedras Negras , Humberto Martínez Cantú, national president of the Export Maquiladora Industry (INDEX), warned of a slowdown in the export sector, reflected in a drop of 45 thousand members to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in May alone.

Martínez Cantú attributed part of the impact to cyclical factors, but also to an uncertain economic environment marked by unilateral decisions by the United States, such as the steel and aluminum tariffs recently imposed by the Donald Trump administration.

"Yes, of course? It's affecting us. This Mr. Trump, as you can see, is a very erratic person: he makes decisions like this and then reverses them," he said.

The business leader explained that INDEX United States has held meetings with members of Congress, representatives from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and officials from both parties in Washington, DC, seeking to mitigate the effects of this trade policy.

Regarding figures, he emphasized that Mexico currently has 22 million formal jobs , of which 3.3 million are directly related to the export maquiladora industry and another 6 million are indirect jobs generated by the sector. In total, INDEX represents 1,400 affiliated companies.

Martínez pointed out that although some industries adjust their workforces based on the season, the drop in IMSS affiliations reflects a worrying trend.

"It's cyclical, yes, but the decline remains constant. That should put us on alert," he concluded.
