Netanyahu nominates Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize

Netanyahu nominates Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed to the Norwegian Nobel Committee that US President Donald Trump nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize, a statement he conveyed to the White House resident on Monday during his visit to Washington.

"You are forging peace as we speak in country and region after country. So I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. It nominates you for the Peace Prize, which is well deserved, and you should receive it," Netanyahu told reporters at the White House, presenting his letter to the U.S. president.

Trump welcomed the nomination, stressing that "coming from you (Netanyahu) in particular, it's very significant."

The letter, released hours later by the Israeli prime minister's office, calls for the award for the US president for his "steadfast and exceptional dedication to promoting peace, security, and stability around the world" and in the Middle East in particular.

In this region, according to the letter published on the social network X, "their efforts have brought about a drastic change and created new opportunities to expand the circle of peace and normalization."

Netanyahu mentioned the "groundbreaking" Abraham Accords, sponsored by the Trump administration during its first term, through which Israel established diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco, among other countries, and which he emphasized "reshaped the Middle East and represented a historic step toward regional peace, security, and stability."

"President Trump's vision and bold leadership fostered an innovative diplomacy defined not by conflict and extremism, but by cooperation, dialogue, and shared prosperity. Few leaders have made such tangible progress toward peace in such a short time," he emphasized.

The Israeli prime minister arrived in Washington on Monday to meet with his ally, while a delegation from his country is expected to resume negotiations for a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip in Doha, Qatar.

Netanyahu is not the first foreign leader to nominate Trump, who has long coveted a Nobel Prize. Last month, the Pakistani government decided to "formally recommend" the US president for his diplomatic work during the crisis between the Asian country and its neighbor India, after securing a ceasefire agreement between the two governments in early May following the clashes in Kashmir.
