Quintos de Mora: the paradise where Pedro Sánchez seeks refuge from the great storm

Quintos de Mora: the paradise where Pedro Sánchez seeks refuge from the great storm

A small corner of Toledo province served as a refuge for Pedro Sánchez this past weekend. The president flew by helicopter from Madrid to the state-owned Quintos de Mora estate, where he remained until Saturday to reflect and consider measures to combat corruption and how to address the Santos Cerdán scandal.

This is not the first time that a Spanish head of state has visited the Toledo estate. Numerous Prime Ministers , such as Felipe González, José María Aznar and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, have held meetings there with ministers and foreign leaders, and have also used it as a holiday destination .

The history of Quintos de Mora

The Quintos de Mora National Reserve occupies 6,864 hectares within the municipality of Los Yébenes . In 1246, King Ferdinand III the Saint sold the mountains that include and surround Quintos de Mora to the city of Toledo , thus creating the Municipal Lordship of the Montes de Toledo . This situation continued until the confiscation of 1829, when "a series of mountains were awarded to the municipality of Mora de Toledo , from then on called Quintos de Mora," explains the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

Some time later, in 1942, Quintos de Mora was acquired by the State Forestry Heritage and subsequently became part of it with the creation of the Institute for Nature Conservation (ICONA) in 1971. It is currently attached to the Ministry of the Environment, specifically to the Autonomous Agency for National Parks , as a space dedicated to the sustainable management of the Mediterranean forest.

A rich fauna and flora

The privileged location of Quintos de Mora explains its significant natural value. This area is located in the central part of the Oretano System, on the southern slope of the Montes de Toledo , with a horizon marked by mountains ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 meters high, divided by a large raña , "the name given to the Mediterranean forest plain of the Montes de Toledo," according to Castilla-La Mancha Tourism.

The dominant vegetation here is holm oaks , along with cork oaks, strawberry trees, and ferns. In the wetter valleys, we can also see maples, gall oaks, and Pyrenean oaks. As for wildlife, we'll find everything from deer, fallow deer, and roe deer to eagle owls and black vultures . The area is even occasionally visited by golden and imperial eagles.
