Simas Torreón plans a modern treatment plant to comply with new environmental regulations.

Simas Torreón plans a modern treatment plant to comply with new environmental regulations.

In order to meet the criteria established in NOM-001-SEMARNAT-2021, in force since March 2023, the Torreón Municipal Water and Sanitation System (Simas) is maintaining an open call for the exploration of technical proposals that will allow the construction of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Simas Torreón's general manager, Roberto Escalante González, explained that the plan is to have a plant with a capacity of up to 1,900 liters per second, similar to the current one, but adapted to the new environmental standards. The current infrastructure has become obsolete due to the criteria established in the official standard.

Last March, Simas submitted a report on the project to the National Water Commission (Conagua), and a new progress report is expected to be presented to the federal agency in August. In addition, Torreón City Council ratified the agreement for the implementation of technical, administrative, and financial actions. that allow the acquisition of the new plant until the necessary resources are obtained.

Since 2023, the project has been advancing with studies, evaluations, and the receipt of proposals from various companies interested in participating in the plant's construction. Escalante González emphasized that the call remains open, allowing for the submission of new technological options.

The selection process for the technology and companies responsible for the project has not yet been finalized, but work is being done in coordination with Conagua to meet the requirements established in the amendment to NOM-001 in 2025.

The manager of Simas considered that the transition to a new wastewater treatment infrastructure is essential to guarantee the water sustainability of Torreón. In addition to meeting environmental quality standards, the new plant will allow the reuse of treated water in various industrial and agricultural activities, contributing to development and efficient use of resources.

He noted that the goal is to guarantee a modern and efficient infrastructure that meets quality and environmental safety standards, ensuring the proper treatment of wastewater in Torreón.
