Will Quintana Roo teachers participate in the national strike on May 15?

Just days after resuming classes after a work stoppage of more than two months, teachers and administrative staff of basic education in Quintana Roo publicly expressed their intention to join the national strike called for May 15, in rejection of the reform to the ISSSTE Law approved in 2007 and promoted by the federal government.

During the Labor Day commemorative march held on the morning of May 1 in Cancún, Leticia Cauich, spokesperson for the Benito Juárez Central Struggle Committee, confirmed that teachers in the northern part of the state are preparing to join the national protest.

"We are heading straight for a national strike on May 15, and all negotiations with President Claudia Sheinbaum will be conducted within the framework of the strike," he declared during his speech at the Parque de las Palapas.

Cauich stated that this new mobilization will be the starting point for a negotiation process in which the main demand will be the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, a reform that workers accuse of having seriously undermined their right to a decent retirement.

"It will be an indefinite strike. If we don't want to have a poor, miserable old age, if we don't want to be condemned to borrowing, we must be willing to make sacrifices," he warned.

The duration of the new strike will depend directly on the progress of negotiations with the federal government. For now, union members remain on alert, and a formal call with the logistical details of the mobilization is expected to be issued in the days leading up to May 15.

Cauich announced that the protest will be replicated in all eleven municipalities of Quintana Roo, with the support of the State Central Struggle Committee, which coordinates teacher actions throughout the state.
