Not just digestive problems and anemia: 8 signs you have parasites

Not just digestive problems and anemia: 8 signs you have parasites

Parasites

Source: Istock

Doctors and specialists explain that parasites are organisms that lodge and survive in the human digestive system, where they obtain nutrition and shelter. However, they can cause significant damage and generate complex symptoms for those who suffer from them. What are the six signs to watch out for?

According to Century Medical & Dental Center, intestinal parasites can cause a wide range of symptoms, the most common being:

1. Anal itching, especially at night

Itching in the anal area, especially at night, is a typical symptom of infections such as pinworms. It can make it difficult to sleep and cause irritability.

2. Appetite changes and weight loss

Both decreased and increased appetite, along with unexplained weight loss, can be signs that parasites are consuming nutrients before the body can absorb them.

3. Unexplained tiredness and fatigue

Persistent fatigue, a feeling of exhaustion, or weakness, even after resting, may be due to parasites interfering with the absorption of essential nutrients, causing deficiencies such as anemia.

4. Skin problems

Skin rashes, hives, eczema, rosacea, or unexplained itching may be related to the immune response to parasites or the toxins they release.

5. Sleep and mood disorders Difficulty sleeping, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, mood swings and nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism) can be a consequence of the nocturnal activity of some parasites and the toxins they produce.

6. Muscle and joint pain

Some parasites can migrate to muscles or joints, causing pain, inflammation, and discomfort without apparent cause.

7. Constant hunger or unusual cravings

Feeling constantly hungry or having unusual cravings, especially for sugary or salty foods. This may be because parasites consume nutrients and alter the body's appetite signals.

How to avoid the spread of parasites?

Cinfansalud offers some daily hygiene recommendations. In some cases, these worms can cause very visible changes in the body, while in others they don't. In all cases, it's important to follow some cleaning tips to reduce the risks.

1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, after using the bathroom, and after handling soil or animals.

2. Disinfect fruits and vegetables properly before consuming them.

3. Cook meats thoroughly to eliminate any parasites present, avoiding the consumption of raw or undercooked meats, especially fish and pork.

4. Keep your nails short and clean to prevent parasite eggs from lodging under them.

5. Avoid touching your mouth or nose with dirty hands to prevent parasites from entering your body.

6. Keep bedding, pajamas and underwear clean.

7. Shower daily, especially in the morning, to remove eggs deposited on the skin.
