The presence of insects is a common problem , especially during hot weather, when ants, flies, and cockroaches begin to invade homes in search of food and shelter . In addition to being annoying, they can become vectors of disease and cause hygiene problems. However, it can be solved naturally with the use of these three aromatic plants, which repel these bugs.

Among the most recommended solutions, specialists recommend the use of aromatic plants, which, thanks to their active compounds, act as natural insecticides, keeping insects away without affecting air quality or endangering residents, especially children.

The doctor and expert from the National Institute of Health (INS) of the Government of Peru , Oswaldo Salaverry, especially highlighted for this purpose the effect of three plants that, due to their aroma, act as repellents.

1) Rue:

With its characteristic, intense, penetrating scent, rue has been known since ancient times for its repellent properties. It contains alkaloids and essential oils that directly affect insects such as moths, mosquitoes, and cockroaches. It is recommended to place small bouquets in corners of the house or hang sachets of dried leaves in closets and cupboards. Its effect is long-lasting and, unlike synthetic insecticides, does not pose a risk to children or pets.

2) Basil: Not only is it delicious in the kitchen, but it's also an effective plant for repelling flies and mosquitoes . Its fresh aroma, produced by eugenol and other volatile resins, acts as a powerful natural repellent. Studies indicate that these compounds interfere with insects' olfactory receptors, preventing them from finding food sources or nesting sites. For best results, keep pots of fresh basil near windows, doors, or in the dining room. It can also be used in cloth bags as part of a blend of aromatic plants to repel insects in closets and bedrooms.

3) Eucalyptus:

It is one of the most complete plants in terms of repellent properties. Its aroma, derived primarily from eucalyptol (cineole), is highly unpleasant to insects such as mosquitoes, moths, and ants. Its use not only prevents bites but also helps purify the air. Fresh leaves can be used in vases or dried in small bags to hang in vulnerable areas. It is also common to boil eucalyptus leaves to release their steam indoors, creating a natural barrier against insects.

Why do insects escape strong odors?

Insects shy away from strong odors, primarily because they are often associated with signs of danger or threats . Many of these individuals have special glands that release chemicals with unpleasant aromas when they feel threatened, in order to protect themselves from predators and deter them from attacking them. Furthermore, their sense of smell is usually highly developed, allowing them to detect volatile compounds in the environment to make vital decisions, such as searching for food or avoiding danger.

When they smell these scents, such as those of aromatic plants, they understand that there is a risk, so insects tend to escape to seek refuge in other areas and protect themselves.
