Clandestine clerén-type alcohol factory dismantled

The Specialized Corps for the Control of Fuels and Merchandise Trade (Ceccom) yesterday dismantled a clandestine clerén-type alcohol factory in a home in the El Portón sector of the Navarrete municipality, Santiago province.

During the operation , carried out pursuant to a court order, according to a press release, 9,435 liters of homemade alcohol , unfit for human consumption, were dumped into 46 55-gallon tanks and four five-gallon jugs. Twenty-six empty jugs were also seized.

Prosecutor Merary Guzmán of the Santiago Prosecutor's Office's Special Investigations Department participated in the operation , coordinated by the Cibao Central Regional Directorate of the Ceccom (National Police) in conjunction with the National Police. The operation was also supported by the National Police's Intelligence Directorate, the press release adds.

Two Haitians were arrested in flagrante delicto and brought before a court for violating Law 17-19 on illicit trade, smuggling, and counterfeiting of regulated products. A vehicle allegedly used to transport the illegal product was also seized.

Minister supports the operation

Through his X account, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, who also coordinates the Table for Combating Illicit Trade, spoke about this operation , indicating that "this frontal combat protects lives , the economy and fair trade ."

"Thanks to the coordinated action of the State, the Dominican Republic has maintained zero deaths from adulterated alcohol since 2022. Our commitment is clear: where there is illicit activity, there will be an immediate response," he added.
