Claudia Sheinbaum: We want the USMCA to remain in place.

MEXICO CITY.- This Wednesday morning, during her regular press conference, the president of Mexico , Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo , assured that so far there is “no” sign that the trade agreement with the United States and Canada (T-MEC) is going to disappear, after the American president, Donald Trump , said that his partners have not respected it and that it will be “renegotiated very soon.”

“In his statement, (Trump) says, 'It will be reviewed in 2026, and we'll see what happens.' So far, we have no other indication that the USMCA will disappear. Nothing. On the contrary, in the discussions we have with the secretaries of both the Treasury and Commerce, work continues within the USMCA,” the president said.

Claudia Sheinbaum referred to the statements of her American counterpart, who yesterday Tuesday during a Meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney , he stressed that the USMCA has been and continues to be “very effective” but also noted that countries must respect it.

The president insisted that Mexico has "favorable conditions" with the United States, but asked not to speculate about the renegotiation of the treaty.

" We, as always, hope that it will be maintained (…) that the revision or renegotiation will be small, that it will be as little as possible," he concluded.

He specified that the negotiations will proceed gradually, always with a "cool head" and in close coordination and communication with the United States government.

He also reiterated that the trade agreement has been "very beneficial" for the three countries, and he is confident that the U.S. will want to maintain it.

"The trade agreement has been beneficial for all three countries, and there's also a significant degree of economic integration. So, if you look at it from that perspective of what's happened since January 20th, the United States also wants to maintain the USMCA," he noted.

Since taking office in January, Trump has waged a global trade war , including against Canada and Mexico, two of his biggest partners in this area.

Although it has not implemented so-called "reciprocal tariffs" against Ottawa and Mexico, both neighbors face 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum , as well as customs duties on vehicle parts manufactured in both countries that are not subject to the USMCA.
