They consolidate the longed-for Imperial Presidency

“I disagree with López Obrador because he only offers a return to the past, a past I know well and don't want for Mexico,” I explained to the prestigious journalist Héctor de Maulón eight years ago.

Unfortunately, in 2018, López Obrador won and proceeded to dismantle the institutions built during the short-lived Mexican democratic spring. Let's face it, in five years of shrewd political work, he managed to change the regime of the Republic and resurrect the Imperial Presidency.

But sadly, Lopezobradorism and its continuation return us to an authoritarian past that the new generations do not deserve. The electoral reform proposal of the "revolution of consciences" offers the generations of the 21st century a new beginning, something similar to the torment of Sisyphus.

They launder money, SHCP demands evidence

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that investigations by the Office of Foreign Assets Control have identified three Mexican banks involved in money laundering for fentanyl cartels.

Banking institutions denied this, and the Treasury Department asked U.S. authorities to provide evidence, as for some reason the Treasury Secretary did not provide proof of his claims to the Mexican government.

It could be mistrust, since the money laundering accusation was filed by the same Treasury office that reported smuggling of crude oil stolen from Pemex to Texas and even handed over a map. The Mexican government has not completed the investigation nor has it arrested anyone, despite being informed since May.

Is President Sheinbaum being misinformed?

On Wednesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum, when asked about her opinion on agent Matthew W. Allen's claim that members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel spied on the DEA in New York, did not respond precisely.

They didn't tell the President that the spying took place in New York and that, although the DEA exaggerated it, the outcome was bloody because the cartel identified one of the witnesses in Rubén Oceguera's trial.

The witness was Iván Morales, who at one time was attached to the now-defunct Federal Police and survived the downing of the helicopter by hitmen belonging to the cartel leader and father of the accused. He was identified and killed last May. The President was not told any of this.
