Christus Muguerza Hospital in Altagracia performs its first liver transplant in Guanajuato
The Christus Muguerza Altagracia Hospital successfully performed the first liver transplant in its history, becoming the first private medical center in the state of Guanajuato to have an Active Liver Program with a formal evaluation protocol.
The surgery was performed on June 17th, and thanks to a multi-organ donation from the state of Colima, it gave a new lease on life to a patient who was on the waiting list.
The procedure was led by Dr. Nicolás Fernández, a specialist in hepatology and gastroenterology, in collaboration with the hospital's Transplant Committee and a multidisciplinary team highly trained in liver transplantation.

"It's a very important procedure that we were able to perform at this CHRISTUS MUGUERZA Altagracia Hospital in León. Liver transplant is one of the most important surgeries and procedures that improves the quality of life, but above all, it also prolongs the life expectancy of many patients with cirrhosis and terminal liver disease," commented Dr. Nicolás.
He added that this type of liver transplant is performed in very few cities in Mexico, so he emphasized that this new program provides the opportunity to many people who require this procedure.

The patient is currently recovering at home, under specialized medical supervision. His positive progress represents a significant advance for specialized medicine in the region and strengthens the hospital's commitment to providing access to highly complex treatments in the private sector.
For his part, Guillermo Anaya Pardo, general director of the Christus Muguerza Altagracia Hospital, highlighted the importance of this first transplant at the hospital, noting that some patients often have to travel to other states and even abroad to undergo this type of procedure.
"We started the transplant program a little over a year ago. We enrolled the patient five or four months ago, and we were very fortunate because, as Dr. Nicolás mentioned, it was thanks to that donor that it was possible," Anaya Pardo said.

Organ procurement is an essential part of the program, and the hospital actively works to foster a culture of donation based on respect, empathy, and social awareness. Since the program's implementation, the hospital has offered specialized care in liver and kidney transplants, with a comprehensive approach that prioritizes the well-being of patients and their families.
For his part, Rodrigo López Falcón, director of the Guanajuato State Transplant Center, representing Gabriel Cortés Alcalá, head of the Guanajuato Health Secretariat, reported that Guanajuato has been known in recent years for being one of the first in kidney donation and transplantation, both from living and deceased individuals.
“Liver transplants had been performed but the program was halted. This was at the High Specialty Hospital, and well, this month the program restarts with this successful liver transplant, which gives new hope to the entire population of the state of Guanajuato who requires a liver transplant. This gives them this option and prevents them from leaving home. We are very pleased that the offer of specialized procedures is increasing in the state,” he shared.
