Claudio Cataño stands out in his adaptation of Aureliano Buendía

Claudio Cataño isn't one to seek the spotlight or amass a following. While others celebrate digital visibility, he shuts down his social media and focuses on what's essential: acting. But playing Aureliano Buendía in the ambitious Netflix adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude has inevitably placed him in the spotlight .

The 39-year-old Colombian actor was recently honored at the Platino Awards with the Best Male Performance award for bringing the legendary colonel to life. A monumental role that not only marked a turning point in his career, but also required him to navigate, on stage, the entire cycle of a life: from youth to old age. "It was an odyssey, an epic journey. It allowed me to explore every stage of a complex man, from his 20s to the end," he said after receiving the award.

Aware of the symbolic weight of Aureliano, a central figure in Gabriel García Márquez 's work, Cataño understood from the outset that it wasn't about imitating: "I had to create my own Aureliano ." And so he did.

Despite the recognition, the actor insists that awards do not define his path .

"This is a job ," he says. "I don't want to be a celebrity, nor do I aspire to be one. Not because it's wrong, I'm just not cut out for it." In an environment where constant exposure seems obligatory, his decision to stay away from social media sets him apart. He closed his personal accounts and stays away from that logic. "I'm not active on those digital platforms that now seem indispensable," he commented.

Part of her professional life, however, is revealed through the profile of her partner , actress María del Rosario Barreto. From there, her followers can get a glimpse into the fruits of the series and the current state of her career .

The second part of One Hundred Years of Solitude , which will arrive on Netflix on December 11, will find him back in the role that brought him international fame. "I'm focused on that now. It's a long process, but very rewarding," he commented from Madrid.

During the Platino Awards , he embraced the moment with humility and a touch of humor. "Yesterday I played soccer, and even though I'm terrible, I felt like a goal scorer. They treated me very well. Today I stood on a stage where great figures in our industry have performed. I feel lucky. It hasn't all been due to merit: I've been lucky , and I don't want to forget that," he reflected.

There was also a nod to the producers : "Don't worry, I haven't become inaccessible. My fee is still reasonable. I like to work . All good."

Although he keeps a low profile, Cataño is no stranger to the industry . In 2016, he made his directorial debut with the feature film Moria , which he also wrote and produced. His connection to the arts is inherited: his father, Mauricio Cataño, is a filmmaker; his grandfather, Mario Rivero, was a poet; and his uncle, Fausto Panesso, is a writer.

He grew up in the La Candelaria neighborhood of Bogotá, raised by his grandparents. After being expelled from several schools for behavioral issues, he found a viable path in theater . He enrolled at the Rubén Di Pietro School and has since built a career based on discipline , introspection, and commitment.

  • Looking to the future, he's clear about the types of roles he wants to take on : characters that connect him with his identity and values. Among his role models, he mentions the Argentine actor Ricardo Darín , whose career he admires for its consistency . "I want to continue playing characters with whom I have a direct connection. To make a living from this with dignity, without losing sight of what's important ," he summarizes.

"I am not an active person in the bridges and networks that have been activated in recent years" Claudio Cataño Actor of the series "One Hundred Years of Solitude "

Her work on One Hundred Years of Solitude coincides with a boom in Latin American productions on streaming platforms . For Cataño, being part of this project means more than a professional achievement. It's an opportunity to contribute to a work with enormous cultural and symbolic value for the region. "It's a story that is part of our identity, and being in it is a huge honor," she says.

Even so, he insists that the focus must remain on the essential: the craft . "I receive everything that has come my way with gratitude . But I don't want to lose my focus . I'm interested in my work, in doing it with rigor, and in earning a decent living from it," he emphasizes.

As he prepares for the upcoming months of filming, Cataño reflects on the journey that brought him here. He acknowledges that he's been lucky , that he's been in the right place at the right time, but also that it's been a matter of effort and perseverance .

He doesn't project himself as a commercial figure or a fashion icon. His ambition lies elsewhere: to tell good stories , take on profound roles, and remain true to his professional ethics.

Focused

After wrapping the series, he doesn't rule out returning to directing , writing, or getting involved in independent projects . "I'm interested in continuing to explore from different perspectives. But always from a professional perspective ," he concludes.

In an industry increasingly focused on exposure, Claudio Cataño represents a different way of being in art : silent, committed, and coherent. Like his character, Colonel Aureliano Buendía , he also carries a heavy history on his shoulders. And he has managed to sustain it firmly.
