Cristina Kirchner arrives in Corrientes to lead the PJ campaign.

Former President and current leader of the Justicialist Party (PJ),Cristina Kirchner, is leading the Peronist campaign in Corrientes and is traveling to the northeastern Argentine province on Saturday, June 7, to support the gubernatorial candidacy of the current mayor of Paso de los Libres, Martín Ascúa , amidst the internal disputes within the political space.
"Attention, save the date | On Saturday, June 7, Cristina Kirchner and I have a meeting with all the decent people who dream of a Corrientes with opportunities and without corruption. Don't miss it!" Ascúa wrote on social media while promoting the event, which will take place at 3 p.m. at the Carlos Gomes Amphitheater.
The Justicialist Party's National Council endorsed Ascúa's candidacy last Tuesday during a meeting chaired by Cristina Kirchner at the party headquarters at 130 Matheu Street, which aimed to assess the country's "political and electoral situation."
The former head of state's visit to Paso de los Libres was confirmed by the head of the Corrientes PJ (Party of the People's Party) and former senator Ana Almirón , who stated that the former president was "concerned" about the storm in that jurisdiction and highlighted the former president's intention for Peronism to govern the province of Misiones, although she acknowledged the difficulties in reaching agreements within the political space.
The gubernatorial elections in Corrientes, scheduled for August 31 , are shaping up to be a key contest. The current provincial leader and president of the local UCR (United Left), Gustavo Valdés , cannot seek reelection, but maintains his influence within the Corrientes political scene. Thus, Peronism has the opportunity to paint a province blue, given the obligation to change the provincial leader.
Within the ruling party's alliance, there are several potential candidates to succeed the current governor, such as his brother, Juan Pablo Valdés , the current mayor of Corrientes, Eduardo Tassano , and national senator, Eduardo Vischi . However, it is not yet clear who will head the ruling party's list in Corrientes, something they will determine in the coming weeks.
