Cristina Kirchner requested permission from the Second Federal Oral Court to receive Lula da Silva at her home during the Mercosur summit.

Cristina Kirchner asked the Second Federal Oral Court to authorize a visit by Brazilian President Lula da Silva to her home in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Constitución. The former president is under house arrest following her conviction in the Vialidad case. The Brazilian president will arrive in Buenos Aires this Wednesday to attend the Mercosur summit .

Kirchner's lawyer, Alberto Beraldi, filed the request on Tuesday. He asked that Lula be allowed to see her while he is in the city. Judge Jorge Gorini, who sits on the court with Gonzalo Giménez Uriburu and Andrés Basso, confirmed the filing of the petition. "Cristina Kirchner's defense team today filed a petition requesting authorization for Lula's visit," he told AFP.

The request is under review. There has been no official response from the court yet. Lula will spend less than 24 hours in the country. He will arrive tonight and return on Thursday, after the regional meeting at the San Martín Palace.

Lula is not scheduled to meet with Javier Milei. However, he does intend to visit Cristina Kirchner. The meeting will be at her home at San José 1111, where she is under house arrest.

The Mercosur summit will be held on July 2 and 3. Argentina will host the meeting, where the leaders will seek to strengthen regional integration. Lula will assume the pro tempore presidency of the bloc.

The political context between Brazil and Argentina is tense. Javier Milei has accused Lula of being a "corrupt communist" and distrusts Mercosur. He proposes direct bilateral agreements and an aggressive economic opening, especially toward the United States.

Lula takes an opposing view. He defends the bloc as a tool for regional unity and protection. He also promotes human rights, the environment, and sovereignty against the powers.

Despite the differences, Mercosur remains crucial for the countries of the region. If the court allows it, Lula da Silva will try to close his visit to Buenos Aires with a political gesture toward Cristina Kirchner.
