Iran strikes back with a barrage of missiles on Israel

One of the projectiles that hit Tel Aviv sent up a thick column of smoke. Israel claims Iran shot down two fighter jets and captured a pilot alive. So far, 22 people have been injured.

Air raid sirens sounded across Israel tonight after Iran launched a missile attack against the country in retaliation for the bombing that has continued since dawn in the Persian country.

A projectile has hit Tel Aviv, sending up a thick column of smoke, according to live footage from the Israeli city and Israeli media reports.

The country's emergency services have responded to seven sites in the Gush Dan area, north of Tel Aviv, following this offensive. So far, they have treated 22 injured people .

In Jerusalem , where the population was asked to take refuge in bunkers, some interceptions of the projectiles have been heard.

Israel, meanwhile, claims that Iran has shot down two fighter jets and captured a pilot alive.

The population is now authorized to leave shelters and protected areas, although authorities ask them to remain close to them.

"Leaving protected areas in all areas of the country and remaining near them is permitted. You are asked to follow the instructions of the Home Front Command," the Army said.

As the missile barrage unfolded, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz asserted that Iran had " crossed red lines by daring to attack civilian population centers in Israel."

"We will continue to protect the citizens of Israel to ensure that the ayatollahs' regime pays a heavy price for its criminal acts," Katz said.
