Raquel Peña participates in the Mass to inaugurate the Pope's pontificate.

This Sunday, the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate was celebrated, in which Raquel Peña , vice president of the Dominican Republic, participated.
This is his second trip to the Vatican as a government representative. The first time was in June 2022, when he held a private audience with the then-supreme pontiff, the late Pope Francis.
He spoke with him about caring for the earth and its natural resources, ending conflicts affecting humanity, and asked for his prayers for the health and well-being of Dominicans.
"May this new era bring more hope , unity , and peace for all humanity," Peña said in a press release, also expressing his hope that the pontificate of the new leader of the Catholic Church will bring greater unity and trust.
The vice president was joined by other officials from the more than 150 delegations present and thousands of Catholic faithful during the ceremony held in St. Peter's Square.

Among those present were Peruvian President Dina Boluarte; Italian President Sergio Mattarella; U.S. Vice President James David Vance; and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with whom he held an informal meeting, along with Rubio's wife, at the end of the religious service.

Leaders from around the world attended this solemn event. Latin America had significant participation, with delegations represented by its presidents: Gustavo Petro of Colombia, Santiago Peña of Paraguay, Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, and Xiomara Castro of Honduras.
Belize and Canada were represented by their governors.
Also participating were the presidents of Ukraine , Volodymyr Zelensky; Israel , Isaac Herzog; Lebanon, Joseph Aoun; and Poland, Andrzej Duda.
From the reigning houses, the King and Queen of Spain , Felipe and Letizia; the King and Queen of Belgium , Felipe and Mathilde; and Prince Albert of Monaco were present.
