Santos Cerdán goes to Congress to claim compensation of almost 19,000 euros.

Santos Cerdán goes to Congress to claim compensation of almost 19,000 euros.

The former PSOE Organization Secretary received a monthly salary of 5,400 euros during this last term.

Santos Cerdán approached Congress early Friday, even before the registry opened, to formalize a series of procedures arising from his resignation from his seat. One of them was to request the compensation he is entitled to for more than six years as a member of Congress, which amounts to around 19,000 euros .

Cerdán announced his resignation last Monday following the report from the Civil Guard's Central Operational Unit (UCO) released last week implicating him in the alleged commission scheme involving Koldo García and José Luis Ábalos . Upon handing in his resignation, the Navarrese politician lost his parliamentary immunity, and the Supreme Court indicted him this Friday.

Four days after his resignation as a congressman, he himself visited the Congressional Registry, and he did so early in the morning, before it even opened. In fact, he had to wait in the parliamentary offices to formalize his documents.

In one of these documents, he requests the compensation to which he is entitled for having held his seat for more than six years, which is equivalent to the unemployment benefit for employees.

It is charged month to month

The social protection regime for parliamentarians establishes that, after leaving office, deputies are entitled to request compensation of one month's salary for each year of their term , up to a maximum of twenty-four months' salary (two years).

In the case of Santos Cerdán, he has been a member of Congress for just over six years, taking office on May 21, 2019, and has remained in the chamber ever since after renewing his seat in two elections. In this last term, he receives a monthly salary of around 5,400 euros .

Therefore, if he ultimately resigns, he will be entitled to six monthly payments of €3,142.14 each, for a total of €18,853.84. However, this compensation is incompatible with any other remuneration, whether public or private, and is therefore paid monthly.

Currently, only one MP is still receiving this compensation: former Sumar spokesperson Íñigo Errejón , who is now in his final month.
