The Buenos Aires PJ meets to approve its integration into an electoral alliance.

The Buenos Aires PJ meets to approve its integration into an electoral alliance.

There's a busy agenda to resolve, tight deadlines, and excessive mistrust among the parties involved. This Saturday, the Buenos Aires Justicialist Party Congress meets , and one of the items on the agenda is the authorization to join an electoral alliance. The meeting will be held in Merlo, at a union complex selected by the territorial leader and mayor of that district, Gustavo Menendez.

The format will be dual: some leaders will participate in person and others will participate virtually for this meeting convened by the president of the body, Maximo Kirchner . The PJ must register the alliance it forms on July 9. The name of this coalition—which will include parties that already participate in other formations, such as the Frente Renovador, PI, Frente Grande, PC Autentico, Patria Grande, Nuevo Encuentro, and others—is one of the issues that raises disagreements.

Kirchnerism and its allies in the Massismo movement are promoting the inclusion of the Justicialist Party or Justicialism in the name, to support the Peronist electoral proposal in the midterm elections, which will be split in Buenos Aires: on September 7, legislators, councilors, and school counselors will vote. And on October 26, Buenos Aires residents will go to the polls to elect national deputies.

It's a nomenclature that doesn't sit well with the sectors that rely on Axel Kicillof and that formed the Right to the Future (MDF ) movement, with which they are vying for the governorship. "That name isn't appealing to the general electorate," is the argument heard on Calle 6.

However, for the Governor's supporters, expectations for this Saturday's rally in the northern Conurbano area are muted. "Nothing fundamental will be resolved," say those with positions to fill and who are showing up.

Once that process is approved (no one doubts it will happen) , the difficult stage will be July 19th, when the deadline for submitting the lists expires . So far, mistrust has prevailed among the leadership of the various parties, and it's an undesirable preamble for this type of process.

Last Sunday, there was a "mini-summit" between Kirchner, Kicillof, and Massa at the Governor's Office. Some progress was made on the path to "unity," but there were still issues that will be resolved later.

The appointment of representatives (how many? Who answers to whom?) and the "mother of all discussions": the preparation of the lists, are still pending.

With Cristina Kirchner detained and therefore unable to compete, the main position is number 1 in the enormous Third Provincial Section (south and east of Conurbano)

La Cámpora had begun to outline the idea of Máximo Kirchner replacing his mother, but popularity ratings weren't in his favor, and the idea lost traction. Now that spot would once again be contested by women: the mayor of Quilmes, Mayra Mendoza —close to Cristina and Máximo—or Verónica Magario , Kicillof's henchman and a key figure in La Matanza.

There will be a tug-of-war over the candidacies for the eight sections into which the Province is divided. Kicillof aims—with his institutional clout and the support of more than 44 mayors who follow him —to secure 50% of the seats "up for grabs." He needs to strengthen his legislative muscle in a parliament he hasn't controlled since his first term began.

The other half should go to La Cámpora and its associates : Nuevo Encuentro, Juan Grabois. And the Massismo should be included in the same proportion. This is not yet finalized.

Máximo and Massa want "30-30-30" and for Kicillof to designate the "top lists." However, these discussions won't be resolved at the PJ's formal meeting in Merlo. Between this weekend and July 18 at 11:59 p.m., dozens of meetings, arguments, disputes, and slammed doors will occur until the lists are submitted to the Electoral Court.
