From the Quintana Roo Congress, Representative Saulo Aguilar, of the Morena party, presented an initiative with a draft decree to declare May 5th of each year as Chetumal Identity Day. He explained that this proposal seeks to pay tribute to the diversity, resilience, and culture of the inhabitants of the capital of Quintana Roo.

“The state capital has been forged over time by a rich cultural heritage, the collective efforts of its residents, and a deep sense of permanence. This initiative seeks to recognize, preserve, and celebrate the elements that shape the spirit of this city and its people,” he said.

According to the representative, this date will not only evoke historical events or emblematic figures, but will also be a driving force to strengthen local pride, promote culture, and foster social cohesion.

“Our Chetumal residents are a blend of Mayan, mestizo, Belizean, Lebanese, Asian, and other cultures, and from this fusion has emerged a strong and resilient identity. This diversity has enriched our culture, creating a mosaic of traditions, customs, and artistic expressions that deserve to be made visible and celebrated,” he commented.

As part of the proposal, the legislator envisions holding cultural, educational, and social activities every May 5th, including festivals, fairs, exhibitions, artistic performances, workshops, and conferences. These activities, he said, will seek to strengthen the sense of community, promote cultural tourism, and preserve local traditions.

“Recognizing a day dedicated to Chetumal's identity will strengthen local pride, encourage citizen participation, and promote respect for our roots,” Aguilar explained.

He also noted that these types of initiatives can serve as platforms for educational institutions, civil organizations, and authorities to work together to preserve and promote Chetumal's history.

"We're talking about a necessary and timely measure to strengthen community spirit and project our identity abroad," he said.
