MADRID (EUROPA PRESS).- A federal judge has temporarily blocked U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for the children of immigrants, following a class-action lawsuit.

"The deprivation of U.S. citizenship and an abrupt change in a long-standing policy constitutes irreparable harm (to the plaintiffs)," argued U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante of New Hampshire, according to CNN.

The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of a group of people affected by the potential end of birthright citizenship, a right enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment of 1868.

The move is a blow to the Trump administration after the Supreme Court ruled in late June to limit judges' ability to block Trump's controversial executive orders nationwide, while leaving intact the right to file class-action lawsuits.
