X CEO resigns amid controversy over anti-Semitic messages from Elon Musk's artificial intelligence

X (formerly Twitter) CEO Linda Yaccarino resigned Wednesday after spending two years leading the company owned by billionaire Elon Musk .

In a post on her own X account, Yaccarino announced her departure without giving reasons , implying that there is no disagreement with Elon Musk , to whom she declared she was "immensely grateful."

In her lengthy message, Yaccarino is remarkably self-congratulatory, saying that she and her team have managed to "achieve a historic business turnaround together that is nothing short of remarkable," turning the platform into "a digital public square for all voices and the most powerful cultural signal in the world."

Although the social network is now under fire for removing content filters , thus opening the door to openly racist, sexist, or far-right messages, Yaccarino doesn't dwell on any of that criticism; on the contrary, she says her greatest gratitude to Musk is "for having trusted (her) and given me the responsibility of protecting free speech ."

So far, Elon Musk has not commented on his resignation.

The controversy over Grok's anti-Semitic messages

However, in the comments that appeared after Yaccarino's message, several users linked this decision with the incident that arose today with Grok , the artificial intelligence chatbot created by Elon Musk's team and integrated into X.

Artificial intelligence company xAI had removed several "inappropriate" posts from Grok on Tuesday after receiving complaints about the spread of now-deleted anti-Semitic content and comments , in which Grok's texts allegedly contained praise for Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler .

"We are aware of Grok's recent posts and are actively working to remove inappropriate posts," xAI posted on Grok's social media profile, without detailing the content of the deleted messages.

Yaccarino does not mention this incident either, but the coincidence in time of the controversy and the resignation have led many users to believe there may be a cause-effect relationship .

"xAI trains solely on truth, and with millions of users on X, we can quickly identify and update the model where training can be improved," the company said.

Screenshots of the deleted posts show how Grok allegedly praised Hitler's policies, suggested that people of Jewish origin were more likely to spread hate speech online, and expressed apparent support for Holocaust practices.

“What we are seeing right now from Grok is simply irresponsible, dangerous, and antisemitic . This push for extremist rhetoric will only serve to amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already on the rise on X and many other platforms,” the Jewish Anti-Defamation League (ADL) responded on X.

According to the ADL, "the latest version of the Grok model is replicating terminology frequently used by antisemites and extremists to spread hateful ideologies ."

This is a "worrying" phenomenon because, according to the organization, it demonstrates that "the model can replicate phrases and expressions that, while sometimes seemingly harmless, have been appropriated by radical groups to spread messages of intolerance and discrimination."

This isn't the first time xAI has been embroiled in controversy. Last May, the company reversed itself after Grok described the situation of the Afrikaner ethnic group—white South Africans descended from Dutch settlers—as "white genocide" in responses to user questions that were mostly unrelated to South Africa, Musk's home country.

So, xAI explained that the behavior of its chatbot was due to an "unauthorized modification" to the response automations.

This Tuesday, Musk wrote on X: "There is never a dull moment on this platform."
