Black Lions remain silent on lawsuit against FMF

Black Lions remain silent on lawsuit against FMF

The Leones Negros Club of the University of Guadalajara has chosen not to issue a public position regarding the lawsuit filed by 10 teams from the Liga de Expansión MX before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), against the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and Liga MX, with the intention of demanding the return of the promotion and relegation system for the 2025-2026 season .

When asked for an interview with the club's president, Maestro Alberto Castellanos, the response was clear but respectful: "I cannot currently give interviews about promotion and relegation," the director commented, so as not to hinder the proceedings currently underway before the CAS.

Leones Negros' decision not to make a public statement reflects the caution with which the case is being handled by the clubs involved , who have joined legal forces to reverse a measure they consider unfair and detrimental to the competitive development of Mexican soccer. The university club has historically been one of the main drivers of the return of promotion , even when in 2020 they went to the same court alongside Venados FC de Mérida, seeking respect for their right to compete for a place in the top flight.

The lawsuit, first reported by the New York Times, was filed by clubs including Atlante , Cancún FC , Atlético La Paz , Atlético Morelia , Cimarrones de Sonora , Alebrijes de Oaxaca , Mineros de Zacatecas , Venados FC , Jaiba Brava , and Leones Negros . They demand the reinstatement of the system that rewards sporting merit and punishes mediocrity.

For its part, the FMF stated in a statement that it has not been formally notified of any legal proceedings against it . "In relation to the article published on May 20 by The Athletic, we inform you that the FMF has not been notified of any proceedings against it by the Court of Arbitration for Sport."

And he added: "If we are notified, we will present our position to the appropriate authorities," the national soccer governing body indicated.

Thus, while the case unfolds on the international legal scene, Leones Negros prefers to maintain a low profile , waiting for the relevant authorities to rule on the future of promotion and relegation in Mexican soccer.
