Inter Miami and Al Ahly draw 0-0 in the 2025 Club World Cup opener

The 2025 Club World Cup kicked off Saturday in Miami with a scoreless draw between Inter Miami and Egypt's Al Ahly in a Group A match at Hard Rock Stadium .
During the first half, the Egyptian side generated more of an attacking presence and had two clear opportunities to open the scoring. Both were thwarted by Óscar Ustari , who first responded with a header and later saved a penalty from Trezeguet , in addition to blocking the same striker's counterattack.
For the U.S. team, the most notable attempts came in the final minutes of the first half. Lionel Messi sent in a tight corner that was cleared by Mohamed El Shenawy , and Ibrahim then prevented a goal with a timely clearance inside the box.

In the second half, the match continued along its same path. Inter Miami looked more confident, and in the 57th minute, Messi unleashed a left-footed shot from outside the box that was saved by El Shenawy . Shortly after, a free kick taken by the Argentine caused confusion when it hit the side netting, prompting some fans to mistakenly celebrate a supposed goal.
The game continued to be played in midfield, with few opportunities in the penalty areas. Messi appeared again near the end of the match with a long-range shot that forced El Shenawy to deflect; the ball ended up hitting the crossbar before going out of bounds.
With this result, Inter Miami and Al Ahly each earn a point in Group A. Action continues this Sunday when Palmeiras (Brazil) and FC Porto (Portugal) face off at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey .
