Mexico crowned Gold Cup 2025

Mexico crowned Gold Cup 2025

The Mexican national team lifted the Gold Cup once again. They did so with character, with pride, with history on their shoulders and a future in their boots. In front of more than 71,000 spectators at NRG Stadium in Houston, the Mexican national team defeated the United States 2-1 in the Grand Final of the most important tournament in the region , earning their tenth gold star, confirming themselves as the greatest in CONCACAF.

It was a night filled with emotion and symbolism. The historic rivalry between Mexico and the United States entered another exciting chapter , and the team led by Javier Aguirre wrote another page of glory in the history of Mexican soccer. Not only did they once again defeat their bitter rival in a final, as they had in 1993, 1998, 2009, 2011, and 2019, but they did so on U.S. soil, just like in the great feats of the past.

In addition, the Tricolor won its second consecutive Cup , after having won the one in the last edition, defeating Panama in the Final with a goal by Santiago Giménez and led by Jaime Lozano.

The start was an uphill struggle. Just three minutes in, Chris Richards put the Stars and Stripes ahead with a precise header that hit the crossbar and crossed the goal line. But Mexico didn't crumble. On the contrary, they brought out their best in their best match of the tournament, just when it was needed most.

The equalizer came in the 26th minute with a stunning goal from Raúl Jiménez , who once again proved his reliable and lethal striker. Marcel Ruiz slipped him a masterful pass, and the "Wolf of Tepeji" finished with power and quality. In the second half, Mexico delivered the decisive blow: with a double header inside the box, Johan Vásquez flicked the ball in, and Edson Álvarez , with a precise header, scored the 2-1. VAR corrected an injustice: it had initially been ruled out for offside, but the goal was legitimate.

With this goal in the Final, Raúl Jiménez reached 42 goals wearing the Tricolor jersey, and is closely chasing the two best scorers in the history of the National Team, since Jared Borgetti has 46, while Javier "Chicharito" Hernández, remains the top scorer with 52 goals.

Thus, Mexico won its tenth Gold Cup and also the Nations League title , brilliantly closing its path to the 2026 World Cup, which will be played at home.

It wasn't an easy tournament: the performance had raised questions. But against their usual rival, in the most important moment, the Tricolor team was once again great. Because in CONCACAF, history continues to be painted in green.
