Perfect step! Mexico Women's team advances to the U-20 World Cup semifinals

Perfect step! Mexico Women's team advances to the U-20 World Cup semifinals

After securing their spot at the 2026 U-20 World Cup in Poland, the Mexican national team only had to consolidate its position as leader of Group B in the CONCACAF Women's Championship, and that goal was achieved. On Monday, the national team came from behind to win 4-2 against Canada, earning their third consecutive victory .

Mexico is unstoppable in the World Cup Qualifiers in this category . Despite the Canadian team opening the scoring in the 18th minute through Teegan Melenhorst, the Mexicans benefited from an own goal in the 26th minute, allowing them to rally to take the final three points.

However, the match, which took place at the Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium in Costa Rica, had to be suspended for over an hour due to poor weather conditions. Although the field looked battered when play resumed, the Aztecs were undeterred, and before the first half ended, Mexico led 3-1 with goals from María González and Montserrat Saldívar.

Canada showed signs of life in the second half, and in the 59th minute, Annabelle Chukwu scored to cut the lead. However, Saldívar once again dashed any hope for the opposition, scoring her second brace of the competition in the 83rd minute to seal the victory for Canada.

It's worth noting that Montserrat Saldívar is the competition's joint-top scorer, along with Costa Rica's Sheika Scott, with five goals each . Previously, the América player scored her first brace of the World Cup Qualifiers against Nicaragua and also scored in the match against Panama.

This Wednesday, Mexico's semifinal opponent will be determined . If Costa Rica fails to defeat the United States, the Costa Ricans will be the team of the tricolor in the next round.
