Christina Burkenroad gave two-time champion Monterrey a boost in their quest for another title with a nail-biting 1-1 draw against Tigres in the first leg of the Liga MX Femenil quarterfinals.
The El Volcán stadium was packed to the rafters to support the felines, who, despite being the tournament's biggest winners, had their worst tournament ever after finishing in fifth place.
Now, a foul by Dutchwoman Merel van Dongen gave the Amazons a chance to take the lead in the 15th minute in front of their home fans. Jacqueline Maga Ovalle stoked the excitement by converting the penalty after deceiving goalkeeper Pamela Tajonar.
As is typical of Monterrey's classics in the women's tournament, the intensity of the fight for the ball reached its limit with attacks from Katty Martínez and Thembi.
However, as time ran out, Burkenroad emerged with an individual flourish to save her team. The striker shouldered down a pass and, after a half-turn, fired the ball into the net at 90+2. Thus, the champions took a breather before closing out the series on Sunday at home.
