The La Larga offshore test of the Sandberg PalmaVela brings together 30 teams

One of the most attractive offshore races in the Mediterranean, the Sandberg PalmaVela Long Race, has reached a milestone with 30 teams registered for its fifth edition, which will start on April 26 in the Bay of Palma. With record numbers, it could be the most competitive in history.
The diverse fleet is made up of the 100-foot British Maxi Tilakkakhana of Pascale Decaux, the 36-foot Palma-based Mestral Fast of Jaime Morell, and teams such as the Modul of Felix Comas or the Smerit of Tito Moure. All of them are prepared to sail around the Balearic archipelago in approximately 36 hours.

Gaspar Morey, Principal Officer of the RCNP Race Committee, says that “it is always a challenge to design and get the La Larga route right based on the weather forecasts. To do this we use various prediction models, in addition to all the experience of the team, to try to interpret what will happen every hour out there for a couple of days.”
Morey also points out that “one of the successes of La Larga is the ability to adapt that we have in the archipelago to be able to choose a route that is both attractive for the weather conditions and that has many sporting incentives, always seeking to escape from monotony and calm weather.”
