Who is Sergio Omar Gastélum? Saraperos de Saltillo's new manager

The Saraperos de Saltillo have announced the addition of Sergio Omar “El Güero” Gastélum as their new manager, marking a new chapter in the team's history.

The former baseball player arrives in place of Enrique “Che” Reyes , who started the 2025 Season with the Nave Verde.

Career as a player

Originally from Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Gastélum had a distinguished 22-season career as a player in the Mexican Baseball League (LMB) .

He debuted in 1995 with the Tigres Capitalinos and also played for the Vaqueros Laguna, Guerreros de Oaxaca and Diablos Rojos del México .

During his career he won five championships: four with the Tigers (1997, 2000, 2001 and 2005) and one with the Diablos Rojos in 2014. His lifetime batting average was .314 in 1,675 games.

Promotion as manager

After retiring as a player in 2017, Gastélum began his managerial career in 2018 with the Guerreros de Oaxaca , leading the team to the LMB final in his first season.

In the Mexican Pacific League (LMP) , he managed the Yaquis de Ciudad Obregón for four seasons, being named Manager of the Year on two consecutive occasions ( 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 ).

In the 2019-2020 season , he set a record of 44 wins in a 68-game regular season.

Recent success with the Pericos de Puebla

In 2023, Gastélum took over the Pericos de Puebla team after a difficult start to the season.

Under his leadership, the team achieved a remarkable comeback, culminating in winning the LMB championship by defeating the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna in the King Series .

This title marked his first championship as manager and made him the only Mexican manager to achieve this with the Pericos.
