The growth in the number of readers in Spain has been sustained since the pandemic. The 2023 Barometer of Reading and Book Buying Habits, presented by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, shows that the reading rate has increased by 5.7% in the last decade.
"64.8% use their free time to read," the report highlights. This percentage rises to 66.2% when comic book readers are included. When focusing on those who read for leisure, the figure remains at 64.8%, slightly higher than the previous annual figure.
“Frequent readers remained at 52.5%, while those considered occasional only showed a slight increase of 0.4 percentage points,” the report states. Despite the increase, a significant portion of the population remains non-readers . “35.2% of Spaniards never read,” the barometer emphasizes. Among the reasons for this behavior are lack of free time (44%), preference for other activities such as walking or watching TV series (30.6%), lack of interest (29.3%), and health or vision problems (0.9%).PORTFOLIO
