The study, titled "The ability to cope well with adversity in old age is linked to a lower risk of death," examines the effects of resilience on people's lives and longevity.
The scientific publication describes psychological resilience as " an individual's ability to cope with and adapt to challenging life circumstances and events ."The researchers stated that the findings "underscore the importance of efforts to strengthen mental resilience." They also said that, based on evidence, mental resilience " is a dynamic and active process influenced by various factors, including sex, hormones, and genes that regulate the body's response to stress. This capacity is thought to evolve and vary across different periods of the life cycle ."

Good coping skills in later life can help offset the negative impact of chronic illness and subsequent disability. " And while the ability to physically recover from illness or trauma is associated with slower aging and a higher risk of death, it's unclear whether mental resilience might have similar effects ," they explain.
The long-term study was conducted among American adults over 50 years of age , and included a total of 10,569 participants with complete data in the final analysis. Their average age was 66 years; 59% were women.

Thus, they explained that several factors were identified, " among them, meaning in life, positive emotions, self-rated health and satisfaction with social support, as possible influences on psychological resilience. Awakening these positive emotions can enhance the protective effects of psychological resilience and mitigate the negative impact of accumulated adversity on the mental health of adults ."
