When hair transforms and changes color to gray, it marks the beginning of a natural process that is also directly related to aging. How does this process occur, and what other meanings might it be hiding? Specialists answer the question and give meaning to the appearance of gray hair.

National Geographic explains that the appearance of gray hair is caused by a decrease in the activity of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. At the same time, it explains that when a hair follicle produces hair, the color is fixed; hair doesn't change color once it grows, but as it falls out and regenerates, the new hair may emerge without pigment, i.e., white or gray.

As for the average age , this usually occurs around 35, although it can vary depending on genetic factors. Stressful situations such as vitamin and nutrient deficiencies also play a significant role and influence this bodily change.

This was confirmed by a study conducted on mice. The research showed that stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, which releases norepinephrine, a substance that affects melanocyte stem cells, causing them to abandon the hair follicle and become unable to regenerate pigment in new hair.

Can a lack of vitamins cause gray hair?

Vitamins also cause gray hair to appear prematurely and unexpectedly, so you should check that you have enough of these vitamins in your body. - Vitamin B12: This is the most closely linked to premature graying, as it is necessary for the production of melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. A deficiency can cause anemia and premature graying, and it is found in meats, eggs, dairy products, and fish such as sardines and oysters.

- Vitamin D: A lack of vitamin D is also associated with premature hair graying and the appearance of grey hair. It is primarily obtained from sun exposure, fatty fish, and fortified dairy products.

- Zinc: This mineral is important for hair health, and its deficiency can lead to gray hair. Red meats such as beef and lamb, along with poultry such as chicken and turkey, and pork, are excellent sources of this nutrient, providing significant amounts that help maintain health.
