The land of your (holiday) dreams… or not? Interest among the Dutch to travel to America this summer is rapidly decreasing.
The ANWB reported this on Friday based on its own recent research.
This shows that the number of people planning to travel to America has decreased significantly over the past three months. In March of this year, 43 percent of respondents indicated that they were less inclined to travel to America, in May this percentage increased to 62 percent. A significant number of the more than two thousand respondents also indicated that they were "much less inclined" to travel to the country.
Reasons cited for avoiding America include geopolitical tensions, security concerns and stricter border controls. Since President Donald Trump took office, these stricter measures have been in place at the border. In March, the travel advice for LGBTI people who want to travel to the United States was adjusted because "laws and customs there may differ from those in the Netherlands". There have also been protests in America, such as in Los Angeles , because Trump wants to send immigrants away.
The ANWB also sees a shift in booking behavior. "We see that people are more likely to choose European destinations or a vacation in their own country due to the unrest in America and tensions in other places in the world," says ANWB travel expert Seré Seesing.
For people who do travel to America, the ANWB advises to be prepared for the stricter border controls, to check the validity of the passport and visa and to take out good travel insurance with medical coverage. ANWB also recommends a credit card with sufficient credit and a list of important phone numbers.
