Halina Reijn had to "cry like a mother" during the world premiere of Harris Dickinson's film Urchin at the Cannes Film Festival. The 49-year-old actress and director told ANP. Dickinson played the male lead in Reijn's film Babygirl, which was a worldwide box office hit last year.

Reijn was briefly in Cannes last weekend to attend two premieres: Dickinson's directorial debut Urchin, which is showing in the Un Certain Regard sideshow, and director Ari Aster's film Eddington, which is in the Palme d'Or competition. The Dutch actress has been friends with the Hereditary director for years, whom she met through the American production company A24, which made her Babygirl.

"I had to cry like a mother at Harris' final applause," Reijn reports. "I am very proud of both Harris and Ari. They are both very special films in their own way. I really enjoyed being able to witness their success." Harris Dickinson also spoke highly of the Dutch star during interviews he gave in Cannes. He prepared his directorial debut during the shooting of Babygirl.

Urchin is about a homeless man in London who tries to get out of a downward spiral of problems. Eddington by Ari Aster is one of the most talked about films in Cannes. The black comedy is about an American town whose inhabitants derail during the corona period. The leading roles are played by Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone and Pedro Pascal. "I admire Ari's work for its courage and absolute authenticity," says Reijn. She praises the director as a "very dear friend and mentor".
