Despite the benefits in terms of transparency, judges warn of possible security risks and changes in the legal system. A clear negative advice from the Council of State on the cabinet plans to freeze social rents in the Netherlands. According to the council, elements of the plans are in conflict with property rights. In addition, too little thought has been given to alternatives. The Council acknowledges that a targeted compensation for high energy costs for households with a low income is necessary, because they more often live in poorly insulated homes. But renovation seems to be at stake precisely because of the freezing of social rent. Political reporter Bauke Schram highlights the challenges and possible solutions.
