Beauty helps in career? Study results: Poland among the world leaders

However, previous studies on this topic have mostly concerned developed and wealthy Western countries. Is the phenomenon of the "appearance premium" really universal around the world? This was tested by scientists from the University of Mannheim and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

The authors of the study were interested in the perception of beauty among representatives of different cultures and how it affects success in different areas of life. In order to measure what traits people associate physical attractiveness with, scientists used artificial intelligence, which analyzed data in 68 languages ​​from around the world.

This is the first study to consider such a large amount of data from countries across the globe.

Based on the analyses, scientists have concluded that the "beauty premium" phenomenon is quite widespread in the world, but its impact is not the same everywhere. Experts have found significant differences between individual countries.

Poland has found itself in the world's top of countries where a person who has beauty that meets generally accepted standards of beauty can count on an easier path to success. In this respect, we are ahead of, among others, Estonians, Slovenians, Czechs, Belarusians and the Irish. According to the authors of the study, the effect of the "beauty premium" is strongest among the inhabitants of Somalia, followed by several other nations, including Albanians, Finns, Japanese - and Poles.

The phenomenon is particularly common in Western European countries, including France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Denmark, Slovakia, and Estonia. In these societies, physical attractiveness is associated with positive traits such as competence, intelligence, and trustworthiness.
