Drama at school in Chełm. 9-year-old girl dies
The incident took place in one of the non-public special schools. As Commissioner Ewa Czyż, spokeswoman for the Chełm police, told "Fakt", the drama took place on Wednesday, February 26 at around 11:30.
— The girl was attending classes when she took a piece of candy into her mouth and suddenly began to choke. The situation developed rapidly. The school staff reacted immediately, calling the emergency services and making the first attempts to provide help. Unfortunately, despite the quick intervention, the tragedy could not be prevented — the spokesman for the Chełm police told "Fakt".
The girl was transported to hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Nobody knew about this candy? As "Fakt" learned, the girl struggled with a disability and was a caretaker of the facility. Although the Lublin province is still on vacation, the school conducted classes according to the schedule.
Initial findings indicate that the child had a candy with her that no one knew about. For health reasons, she shouldn't have eaten it, but she took it out of her backpack and put it in her mouth without noticing. A moment later, tragedy struck.
The prosecutor's office has already initiated an investigationThe circumstances of the incident are being investigated by investigators. The prosecutor's office has ordered an autopsy to help determine the exact cause of the girl's death and to check whether there could have been other factors contributing to the tragedy.
Choking on Candy – How Does a Tragedy Occur and How to Save a Life?Choking is a condition in which a foreign body blocks the airways, preventing air from flowing into the lungs. — In the case of candy, especially hard and smooth candy, the threat is particularly high – they can easily slide into the larynx and block the trachea. If no immediate intervention is undertaken, it can lead to cerebral hypoxia, and consequently to loss of consciousness and death — says Mateusz Mokrzycki, a paramedic from Passio Poland, who teaches first aid at courses, to "Fakt".
In such a situation, it is important to use appropriate rescue techniques, such as:
- Encourage coughing - if the person is conscious and able to cough, do not pat their back. Coughing vigorously is the best way to dislodge a foreign body.
- Shoulder blade blows – if coughing is ineffective, lean the casualty forward and strike them vigorously between the shoulder blades five times with your hand.
- Heimlich Maneuver – if the previous steps do not help, stand behind the choking person, put your arms around their waist and perform five firm abdominal thrusts (sudden upward pulls, as if you were trying to push a foreign body out).
- If the person has lost consciousness , immediately call an ambulance and start cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
