Everyone has probably heard about this disappearance. There is some disturbing news. The entire investigation could soon collapse.
– It's a complicated case – admits Aleksander Duda, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Katowice, to "Fakt", informing about the progress in the investigation into the disappearance of Karolina Wróbel. The prosecutor's office is receiving or still waiting for expert opinions, including in the field of algology and mycology, underwater searches and polygraph examinations. The arduous, procedural work is underway – that's all the information journalists receive from the prosecutor's office.
Karolina Wróbel's disappearance. What did investigators find out?Karolina Wróbel disappeared in Czechowice-Dziedzice on January 3. She left the apartment she was renting with her brother and Patryk B. (29 years old). There was a party going on inside. Karolina only went out to the store for a moment. She did not return. She left two small children at home.
Karolina's family initially searched for her on their own. The missing person's report was filed on January 5. Patryk B. was arrested five days later. Initially, the prosecutor's office did not reveal the charges brought against him. This only happened in April of this year. It is still unknown how Patryk B. allegedly killed Karolina and what the motive was. According to unofficial information, the 29-year-old allegedly strangled the girl near the garages near the housing estate where they lived. He went out after her. He allegedly threw her body into the Błaskowiec pond. As he testified to investigators, he had to enter the water to drown the body.
A month after his arrest, Patryk B. stopped cooperating with investigators. When he got a defense attorney in February, he withdrew everything he had said earlier. Despite the search, Karolina's body was not found in the Błaskowiec pond.
Former criminal police officer on evidence in the case of Karolina Wróbel's disappearanceCourt expert Maciej Rokus, together with the Special Group of Polish Divers, began searching in the Błaskowiec pond on January 18 this year. He ruled out the possibility that the body of the missing woman was there. At the request of the prosecutor's office, he is currently examining other nearby water reservoirs. This is an area of 80 hectares together with neighboring gravel pits. Prosecutor Duda told "Fakt" that the expert is still conducting searches in a very large area. Gradually, more areas need to be examined and excluded.
Will the evidence collected so far by the prosecutor’s office be enough for Patryk B. to remain in custody and be charged?
– We have to wait until the body floats to the surface. If the body has not been found yet, it does not mean that it is not there in that pond. Ground-penetrating radars and sonars are not a silver bullet, human technology can fail, and sometimes investigators are simply unlucky – believes Arkadiusz Andała, a former police officer. – The suspect confessed. He took part in the on-site inspection and in the procedural activities. The procedural authorities gave credence to his explanations. It is highly probable from a procedural perspective that he committed this act – explains Andała. He explains that the on-site inspection is carried out with the suspect's consent, based on the explanations he gave. The fact that Patryk B. radically changed his behavior during the investigation under the influence of the lawyer's appearance is only his right to defense.
Weak link in the investigation. Family of missing Karolina fears the worstAndała also points out a certain danger, referring to the information about the way Karolina Wróbel was killed. And this may be a weak link in the investigation, which will affect the whole. According to media reports, Patryk B. was supposed to strangle Karolina. The prosecutor's office is officially silent on this subject.
- If the body is not found, it will be difficult to talk about strangulation. The case may be suspended until the body is found. Unless the investigators have some evidence that they are not reporting. Otherwise, the suspect will be released because there will be no strong evidence indicating his participation in the murder. Circumstantial evidence can be disproved - Andała signals.
This is what the mother of the missing Karolina fears the most. "Like every mother, I am afraid that the case of my daughter's disappearance will not be solved, and the perpetrator, if she was murdered, will not be punished," says Tatiana Wróbel (49). "I am afraid that they will close this investigation. It has reached a dead end. We know nothing about the progress," she adds.
The circle of suspects is getting narrower. Polygraph will change the course of the investigationProsecutor Duda reassures and assures that evidence is still being collected and the arduous work of the prosecutor is underway. Prosecutors are waiting for expert opinions, including polygraphs. In May, five people were examined, participants of the party after which Karolina Wróbel disappeared. Among them was the suspect Patryk B. and the brother of the missing Karolina Wróbel.
Investigators suspect that Patryk B. did not act alone . Especially since he was arrested only five days after Karolina's disappearance. Someone could have helped him, among other things, in hiding Karolina Wróbel's body. That is why all participants of the January party were examined. - The circle of people associated with the case will be narrowed after the polygraph tests - Dr. Marcin Gołaszewski, who prepares polygraph opinions for the prosecutor's office, mysteriously tells "Fakt".
