Polish professor killed in Athens. Suspects' statements leaked to media

According to Greek sources, five people have been detained in the case, including the victim's ex-wife. All suspects have been charged and have until Monday to testify before an investigating judge.
Shots in broad daylightPrzemysław Jeziorski was killed on the morning of July 4th while walking to his ex-wife's home in Agia Paraskevi to pick up their two young children. The couple, CNN reported, were involved in a custody dispute, and Jeziorski was planning to take the children to the United States this summer.
However, the Polish scientist never reached the front door. According to police, he was shot at close range by a masked assailant. The execution took place in broad daylight, in one of Athens' safer neighborhoods. The assailant escaped, and police conducted an intensive search for him for several days.
Arrest and dramatic testimonyThe alleged perpetrator was apprehended on July 16th. He is the new partner of Jeziorski's ex-wife. He was charged with premeditated murder. In an interview with officers, he admitted that he was motivated by fear of his partner losing her children. "We were afraid he would eventually take the children. This summer, Przemek wanted to take the children and take them to America. A month and a half ago, I made the decision to end this torment we were experiencing once and for all," he explained.
The man allegedly obtained a gun earlier and asked a Bulgarian friend for help. "Over a month ago, I bought a gun and asked my Bulgarian friend to help me find Przemek and scare him into taking the children," he confessed. On the day of the murder, he knew Jeziorski would be in the area to pick up the children. "I approached him and shot him a few times, but I don't remember exactly how many times," he added.
The role of the ex-wife under scrutinyIn addition to the main suspect, the professor's ex-wife, Konstantina M., and three other men were also arrested. All were charged with involvement in the crime. Although the main suspect accepts full responsibility, his accomplices present a completely different picture of events. Testimony provided to CNN Greece includes accusations directed directly at Konstantina M.
An alleged accomplice from Bulgaria, who was also arrested, presented a story according to which Jeziorski's ex-wife was the mastermind behind the entire scheme. "Actually, from what he told me, she ordered him to do it because she didn't want to give the children to a Pole," he allegedly said. The man described how the main suspect obtained a gun and sought people to take him to Athens to "scare and intimidate the Pole into giving up custody of the children."
Prolonged investigation and trialThe statements of the main suspect and the other detainees are contradictory. Their content, leaked to Greek media, may indicate that the trial in this case will be long and complicated. Much suggests that the role played by Konstantina M. will be crucial – whether she was merely a witness or actively participated in the preparations for the crime.
All suspects have been brought to court and have until Monday to make their official statements to the investigating judge. Their defenses, as well as their final statements in the case, will be decisive for the further course of the proceedings.
