On the occasion of the Sea Days, the Retirees and Pensioners Association of the Polish Steamship Company organized a ceremonial meeting on June 18 at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Szczecin, attended by representatives of maritime associations and other organizations. The authorities of the Polish Steamship Company, with its general director Dariusz Doskocz, and the diocesan chaplain for seafarers, Fr. Stanisław Flis, also attended.
At the beginning, together with the OPTY-MALNI band, the song "The Sea, Our Sea" was sung.
- I have the impression that there are more and more of you - said Dariusz Doskocz. - I am glad that everyone looks like they are in very good health and I hope that is the case.
The director of PŻM presented the current situation of the company.
– In short, it’s hard, but we’re coping – he stressed.
Father Flis wished everyone a pleasant holiday and rest – in health and safety. He informed that on 28 June (Saturday) at 12:00 at the monument “To Those Who Did Not Return from the Sea” at the Central Cemetery there will be a solemn roll call, and the following day (also at 12:00) in the Maritime Church of St. John the Evangelist in Szczecin there will be a Holy Mass for the people of the sea. He reminded that masses for this intention are celebrated there every third Sunday of the month.
Let us add that on June 28 (at 10 am) an assembly is planned at the commemorative stone of the State Maritime School on Wały Chrobrego, and from 1 pm to 5 pm the Captains' Days of the Sea will take place on Łasztownia (on the Captains' Square and in the Old Slaughterhouse). The initiator and main organizer of these celebrations for several years has been the Szczecin Club of Great Navigation Captains.
- Because the city of Szczecin does not organize the Sea Days - explained Captain Włodzimierz Grycner, chairman of SKKŻW. - Szczecin organizes the Sails. If we are not there, there will be no Sea Days at all. We are the last ones who still maintain this tradition. Thank you captains and mechanics for being there. I also thank PŻM for remembering the Sea Days.
He expressed hope that children from schools under the patronage of captains Konstanty Maciejewicz and Antoni Ledóchowski, as well as students of the Maritime University of Technology, would take over these activities someday in the future. He noted that many traditions are disappearing among young captains, including wearing a uniform.
The director of PŻM informed that the company would like to get involved in the organization of the traditional maritime festival and mentioned planned talks with the city president.
– I hope that next year the Sea Days will take place in a more dignified manner, with our stronger participation in them, and that it will be in June, and not tied to the August Sails – he concluded.
During the meeting, the people of the sea who recently left for prison watch were also mentioned. ©℗
